Cheat Grass
  Bromus tectorum

* Non-native grass. Competes with native grasses because it gets its start in the fall when many grasses are dormant. Overgrazing encourages its spread. Perrennial grasses are more able to compete.

* Matures early in summer, removes moisture from ground.

* Because it dries up early it becomes a severe fire hazard, which is a major problem when fireworks are set off in the foothills or vehicles with hot exhaust pipes are driven over patches of this grass.

* Sharp seeds of the mature plant makes it unpalatable for many animals, but the early green leaves are said to be good forage.
