Western Tanager
  Piranga ludoviciana

* Summers in the coniferous and aspen forests in the mountains but is a common migrant in the valleys in the fall.

* The red-pigment in the face is not manufactured but is acquired from the diet. In spite of bright colors, it is surprisingly inconspicuous among the leaves.

* Feeds mostly on insects but also on fruits.
