Reithrodontomys megalotis

* Found throughout most of central and western U.S. and Mexico.

* Prefers dense vegetation near water in grasslands, open desert, and weed patches.

* It feeds primarily on seed; will eat insects.

* It breeds year round and has a litter of 2-4.

* Tail 2 ½ to 3 inches, body 2 ½ to 3 inches. Dark back, light colored belly and undersides of tail.
